New: Fashion & Sustainability Walk

Discover the many facets of sustainability and fashion!

In September 2022, MoMu is launching a new walk, in addition to the popular Fashion Walk. The MoMu Fashion and Sustainability Walk illuminates the many facets of sustainability across the Antwerp fashion scene.

The MoMu Fashion Walk has become a regular among fashion afficionados. In light of the growing importance of sustainability, it is also time to highlight its link with the Antwerp fashion scene. Beginning this September, MoMu is offering a new, second walk: the MoMu Fashion & Sustainability Walk.

BEYOND THE HYPE

Although sustainability is a word that is used both appropriately and otherwise today, and sometimes even feels like a trend, the concept has been around for centuries. Sustainability is made up of many different facets and encompasses far more than we associate with it in our own time. For example, reuse and recycling were a veritable boom during both world wars, not as a trend, but as immediate necessity. Long before the first climate marches, upcycling was also well established among fashion designers. The concepts inherent to sustainable practices have long been applied and are deeply woven into Antwerp’s fashion DNA, not as hype, but as a fundamental principle.

A UNIQUE INSIGHT INTO THE FASHION SCENE

During the MoMu Fashion & Sustainability Walk, participants are invited to explore these many facets. Our MoMu guide brings new perspective to fashion and sustainability, illustrating their multiple layers on the basis of Antwerp’s fashion scene and history. The walk not only takes its participants along the defining locations, designers and movements in the fashion city, but is also enhanced through unique photographic and video material from the MoMu Library archives, further stimulating fascination for fashion.

"The MoMu Fashion & Sustainability Walk offers a different perspective of fashion and shows how sustainability is very broadly interwoven throughout Antwerp fashion and history." , says Kaat Debo, director of MoMu

EXPERTISE

To map out this walk, MoMu sat down with Jasmien Wynants, sustainable fashion expert and co-author of Close the Loop – A Guide Towards a Circular Fashion Industry. She is a freelance sustainability coach for, among others, the Belgian fashion label, Xandres. As she emphasizes, “This walk does not show where you can shop ecologically, or which designers and labels are sustainable. Instead, we want you to see how the principles of sustainability are everywhere.”

"This tour will continue to resonate. Young or old, you really get a sense of how fashion and sustainability go hand in hand, and you discover an inspiring part of Antwerp along the way." - Evelyn
Highly recommended, even for those who are well versed in this subject, because the tour shows you how sustainability ties into the Antwerp fashion scene.” – Mieke
“In short, fascinating and revealing. A local perspective on the importance of sustainability in fashion today.” – Guusje
