MoMu and DE SINGEL present ON_OFF_SPACE

On Friday, 5 May and Friday, 2 June 2023, MoMu offers a platform to the emerging talent of ON_OFF_SPACE, DE SINGEL's artist residency.

The collaboration between MoMu and DE SINGEL is an open call for artists who are at the intersection of performance and fashion. Creatives who are developing ideas and need space to work undisturbed are given this opportunity thanks to the partnership between two key players in the Antwerp cultural scene.

During these nocturnes, performers will set up their stages at MoMu, taking over the entire museum.

Shamisa Debroey, programmer at DE SINGEL: "With ON_OFF_SPACE, DE SINGEL supports local and innovative performance talent. For this unique collaboration with MoMu, we are shedding light on makers who seamlessly combine fashion with performing arts. The selected artists have a strong vision for the future of fashion and display the necessary versatility in their art. These two evenings will leave you overwhelmed by top talent endorsed by DE SINGEL.”

FRIDAY MAY 5
Nadav Perlman - Tohu VaVohu (fashion performance, 90 min)
In Tohu VaVohu, fashion designer Nadav Perlman presents his new collection, but the questions raised during the performance go beyond aesthetic judgments. It is a philosophical investigation of what clothing can mean to us. A sacred ritual between light and dark by an intriguing couturier. An overwhelming spectacle at the intersection of music, performing arts, and fashion.

FRIDAY JUNE 2
Nitish Bhardwaj - Hippolyta (theatre, 30 min)
In this performance by creator Nitish Bhardwaj, Hippolyta, the mythological queen of the Amazons, becomes a symbol of oppression, colonialism and post-colonialism. Although in classical mythology she has long been seen as a supporting character for male protagonists, she is primarily a strong and independent female lead character. Bhardwaj carefully rewrites the myths about Hippolyta to put the monarch on her rightful pedestal. And that results in a denouement that is completely different from the traditional story.

Rida Habib Allah - New Creation (lecture/performance, 30 min)
Fashion designer Rida Habib Allah brings his very first lecture performance. A unique insight into the mind of this maker and a way to put a face on the clothes. He is one of the rising stars in the fashion firmament and creates in the contrasts: between life and death; between image and fashion; between Arab and Western culture. Recently, filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah wore his designs on the red carpet for the premiere of their superhero series Ms. Marvel.

Federico Protto - Dress Rehearsal (performance, 30 min)
Federico Protto is a Brussels-based performance artist and fashion designer who explores the intersection between various facets of his artistry in his series Dress Rehearsals. He describes these performances as a "twilight zone between different materials." Protto creates a living archive through text and song, costumes and instruments, peppered with references to video games and built on interaction with the audience. His Dress Rehearsals are a protest against colonialism, fueled by his South American heritage. It's an ever-evolving performance that is never the same twice.
