MoMu – Fashion Museum Antwerp Is Officially Back!
MoMu is reopening its doors to its renovated building from September 4, 2021 onwards
MoMu – Fashion Museum Antwerp is reopening the doors to its historic Nationalestraat building from September 4, 2021 onwards. After three and a half years of extensive renovations and expansions, MoMu will now be able to permanently welcome visitors. With ambitious reopening programme ‘Fashion 2.021 – Antwerp Fashion/Conscious’ as the official kick-off, MoMu is set to become the central hub and meet-up space in Antwerp, bringing (inter)national fashion culture and tomorrow’s fashion world closer to each and every visitor.
MORE THAN AN NEW OUTFIT
Ever since MoMu closed its doors in 2018, a lot of important changes have been made. Architectural firm B-architecten created 800m² of extra public viewing space – while respecting Marie-José Van Hee’s original signature. Three new exhibition spaces were added, including a full-time exhibition room for the permanent collection. That way, visitors can be welcomed at all times, even during the thematic expo conversions. The renovated entrance hall, including two entryways, has made the museum even more accessible than before. Thanks to the new MoMu Café by Graanmarkt 13 and the new MoMu Shop, visitors can give into their cravings for a healthy and tasty meal and a piece of fashion culture to call their own. The auditorium has a movable stand for even more interactive lectures, conferences and Q&As. The updated MoMu Library has been expanded with added infrastructure to support the MoMu Study Collection, allowing every visitor to not only browse books and magazines but also to touch the actual study objects.
ALL OF ANTWERP IS FASHION 2.021
Starting September 4, visitors will be able to savour the premiere of three opening expos:‘E/MOTION. Mode in transitie’, the Collectiepresentatie and, later on in September, ‘P.LACE.S - De verborgen kant van Antwerpen’. Also, the ‘Fashion Balls’ created in collaboration with Walter Van Beirendonck and the Antwerp Fashion Department will be staying put until the end of November at five outdoor locations in the centre of Antwerp. At the Cathedral of Our Lady, couturier Edouard Vermeulen of Natan dressed a historic statue of the Virgin Mary. During the opening weekend (September 4 & 5, 2021), MoMu will offer visitors a chance to attend workshops and exclusive demo previews on the Vrijdagmarkt.
The reopening of MoMu is the official start of a new era, accessible and inviting to all – from the diehard fashion fan to the curious passer-by.
'A fashion city like Antwerp deserves a museum that allows curious and passionate Flemings and foreign visitors to get to know our fashion culture and history all year round and without barriers. That is why I gladly invested 3.8 million euros in the renovation project and reopening programme through VISITFLANDERS. Thanks to this upgrade, MoMu is ready for the future and Antwerp once again has a hotspot to experience fashion in all its facets', says Flemish Minister of Tourism Zuhal Demir.
